Architectonic project: Joan Rodon Arquitectes Associats

El Museu de Lleida: diocesà i comarcal s’ubica en un punt de convergència entre dues escales de la ciutat, el nucli antic i l’eixample de la Rambla d’Aragó. El nou edifici vol resoldre aquest conflicte, aquest buit urbà. Per aconseguir-ho, es va considerar oportú fer explotar l’edifici en múltiples volums, units per un basament, que donessin resposta als requeriments urbans.

L’accés al museu es produeix a través d’una gran plaça que mena també vers la sala d’exposicions temporals. Aquesta sala es desenvolupa en un doble espai que permet un ús independent de l’horari d’obertura del museu, mentre que les sales d’exposició permanent, gairebé sense obertures, ocupen la part més recollida de l’edifici.

El museu es troba emplaçat al solar on s’aixecava l’antic convent de les carmelites de Lleida, del qual únicament es va mantenir la capella, amb la intenció d’incorporar-hi part de la museografia

 

In July 2003, building work began on the new premises of the Museu de Lleida: diocesà i comarcal, located in the old Llar de Sant Josep on Carrer Sant Crist, originally a discalced Carmelite convent. Building work on this convent started in 1595, with repeated extensions during the 17th and 18th centuries, in 1835 passing into the hands of the provincial government of Lleida due to the disentailment act by Mendizábal. Thereafter it became a military hospital and then a poorhouse. Finally, in 1997, it became the premises of the Museum of Lleida.

The project to adapt the old convent building has been carried out by the architect Joan Rodón, who has managed to combine the new museum and its graphic needs with the spatial conditions of the old architecture. In this respect, the oldest and most important parts of the site have been conserved, such as the facades on Carrer Lluís Besa and Carrer Carmelites and the church, extended in the 18th century.
