The research group Òliba was set up by the Department of Humanities in the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya with the aim to evaluate the potential of new technologies in dissemination and documentation of the Cultural Heritage of Museums. Our initial proposal was simply to experiment how virtual exhibitions may improve the potential of real "exhibitions" in terms of information access, public knowledge and visits to Museums. Our present research project covers four stages, starting with the analysis of the theories that lay behind the construction of Museums webs, and suppose a practical and methodological analysis of previous experiences in Museum digitalizations in Museums in Europe and USA. The third stage, and perhaps the most original one, includes a series of pilot experiences of virtual exhibitions, together with local and regional Museums of Barcelona and Catalonia. The fourth stage and the final pretends to evaluate in order to define standards of web Museums, as a complementary platform for didactics and dissemination within Museums, how people interact with elements (3-D reconstructions, games…), technical advantages and potential for real Museums. The virtual exhibitions should be understood as complements of the real exhibitions, offering not only a small part of what people can enjoy when visiting the real physic Museum. The virtual platforms show a sample of what people can see if they go. Besides, virtual exhibitions should display object, information and images to which cannot be access in the Museum. Virtual exhibitions, as we understand them, should never compete with the real Museums but collaborate with them hand to hand. The last field of research is the analysis of pubic and evaluation of these experiences in order to know, amongst other things, the visitant response at different levels aw well as the quality standards definition for a virtual museum and comparison of results of public response with the presencial one. |
